Hi, my name is Zuleima. I live in in Los Angeles, CA and I have five years as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I wanted to, primarily, make a difference in my local, elderly community. And also because I have family members who have had health issues, and I want to provide the type of level of care that I would provide my own family members to other family members as well.
What advice would you give to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient, be graceful, and be attentive to the level of care that they are providing to a person. And to treat them as if they were their own family member.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Irene. I worked with her an assisted-living facility for about two years. She was always so vibrant and so alive. And she would love it, especially, when I would play 60s music during lunch. And she would always appreciate the fact that I would always encourage her to dance. She's a great dancer, by the way. I also loved doing her nails, and she loved drawing portraits of me. And I think that she always appreciated me when she needed a picker-upper or a simple reminder to her room. She was in the Alzheimer's/dementia unit, so she would always have a little difficult time remembering certain things. But I would make sure to be patient, and there would be times where she would thank me a lot for being so patient with her.
